Who is the most famous celebrity known in Transylvania around the world? Dracula! The pictures shared yesterday were from our tour of what has been nicknamed Dracula's Castle. Staying here in Brasov we learned that Brasov is located in the region of Transylvania. The castle is located less than an hour away from where we are staying in the town of Bran. Between 1377 and 1382, the castle was originally built as a fortress to block enemy invasion and was also used as a customs house. Manpower to build it came from the village of Brasov. It remained a customs house until about 1836.
When Transylvania became part of the country of Romania, Bran Castle as it was called, was symbolically offered to Queen Marie of the Royal House of Romania by the City Council of Brasov. She had it renovated between 1920 and 1937. She strictly supervised the entire project. She ordered the construction of an electric turbine that offered free electrictiy to the surrounding village of Bran, Simon and Moieciu. She and her family lived in the castle until 1948.
Author Bram Stoker put the castle on the map when he created the imaginary character Dracula who is known everywhere around the world. Bran castle is the imaginary residence chosen as Dracula's residence. There is a mix of facts and fiction in telling the tale of Dracula. The biggest fictitious fact is that he was an immortal count from Transylvania, thirsty for the blood of innocent victims. Even though most tourists refer to the castle as Dracula's Castle, it has never officially been given that name.
"Where's Pastor?!"
